The woodcock is an American game bird frequenting marshy and brushy ground. It is found all over the eastern states and the Middle West. It is found all over the eastern states and the Middle West. It is a dumpy looking bird with a very short tail, short legs, a large head and a long, straight beak with which it probes in the soft ground in search of angleworms and other creatures that form its food. The general color is brown with dark marking s on the upper parts. It is a shy, retiring bird, and when flushed makes a short flight like a quail, but less swift and more uncertain. It is difficult to shoot because of its unsteady flight, but it is a fine game bird and excellent eating. It feeds mostly at night.
