It is a dumpy looking bird with a very short tail, short legs, a large head and a long, straight beak with which it probes in the soft ground in search of angleworms and other creatures that form its food. The general color is brown with dark marking s on the upper parts. It is a shy, retiring bird, and when flushed makes a short flight like a quail, but less swift and more uncertain. It is difficult to shoot because of its unsteady flight, but it is a fine game bird and excellent eating. It feeds mostly at night.
