The woodcock is an American game bird frequenting marshy and brushy ground. It is found all over the eastern states and the Middle West. It is found all over the eastern states and the Middle West. The general color is brown with dark marking s on the upper parts. It is a shy, retiring bird, and when flushed makes a short flight like a quail, but less swift and more uncertain. It is difficult to shoot because of its unsteady flight, but it is a fine game bird and excellent eating. It feeds mostly at night.
