Woodchuck-How Caught-I would like very much for you to tell me the correct size trap, bait and full particular of the marmot or woodchuck.
I’ve caught scores of ‘chucks, but never used bait. I set at the mouths of their burrows and along their runways near their burrows. Steel traps, size No. 1 or No. 1 1/2 , the best. Cut a limber pole, five or six feet long, and drive two stakes some distance from the burrow and lash the butt of the limber pole to it. Then tie free end of the pole to the trap chain. Set trap in the burrow or runway, cover with grass or leaves, and visit every day at least-noon and night is better. The limber pole prevents the chuck from pulling out. This is a good way for skunks and other sets, not in the snow. This is my experience in eastern state check trapping. Woodchucks eat grass and clover, garden tops, etc. You may have to study some and try various tricks if a woodchuck is sly. I had one that jumped over my traps, so I set one partly concealed with grass, and the other one under a sheet of tissue paper covered with dirt, just beyond. I got him in both traps.
