WINCHESTER SELF LOADING RIFLE AND .401 | |

WINCHESTER SELF LOADING RIFLE AND .401—Does the Winchester Self Loading shotgun with twenty-six inch barrel shoot as far and as hard as the same gun with a twenty-eight inch barrel? Which is best for ducks and rabbits? Does the two inches make any difference in the balance? Is the .401 Winchester big enough for bears? Does it shoot as true and straight as the .30 U. S. Govt., Model 1903 Rimless, Winchester make? Which is best for the biggest game in the Rockies? I like the .401 if it is as good as the .30 U. S.
I have never fired one of these guns nor have I seen them in use and I could not say whether there would be any difference in the shooting, but I am inclined to think that there would not be any difference worth mentioning, and if I were to buy one of these guns I would choose the shorter one. The .401 Winchester is not to be compared with the Model 1895 using the Model 1903, .30 caliber cartridge, for accuracy and good shooting at long range. The .401 is most valuable for big game at short ranges, such as moose hunting in timber, and for bear hunting. The .30 Rimless Model 1903 is an excellent caliber for general big game hunting, and especially for long range shooting, for it is highly accurate at the longest ranges and holds up its energy well. I would consider it far better than the .401 for hunting in the Rocky Mountains.
