WINCHESTER-LEE — Frankly speaking, I do not think much of this weapon for big or medium sized game shooting. They have been universally found to be lacking in stopping power, and the rifle itself is hardly to be considered as a marvel of the gun maker’s skill. There are so many different rifles upon the market which are so much better than the 6 mm. Lee that I would never advise their purchase for a game getting arm. The only advantage that the 6 mm. possesses and the only one that could possibly appeal to the modern shooter is the high velocity and consequently low trajectory of the load.
If the high velocity cartridge is wanted, the .30 government model ‘06 is much more powerful, having over 200 feet per second more velocity than the Lee straight pull, and has besides considerably more shocking effect and killing power upon animal tissue. This caliber can be obtained in either the new Springfield, which is sold at the low price of $15.50, I believe to members of the National Rifle Association, or in the Winchester model ‘95, either in the musket or sporting styles. If a bolt action is desired, the Sauer-Mauser is a superior arm to the Lee and is well-nigh perfect in balance, finish and in strength of action.
