WILD RICE SEED—Can you tell me where I can get wild rice seed and when I should sow it?
Wild rice seed may be sown in spring or fall, but all things considered it is probably best to sow it in the spring, providing the seed has been kept properly over fall and winter. Yon should sow it in about three feet of water, broadcast. Sow it thickly in small patches rather than thinly over a large area. The seed must be kept cool and moist until sown. Seed houses keep it in cold storage. You perhaps can buy of some of the large seed houses in Minneapolis, St. Paul, and other cities in the Northwest. If you will send to the U. S. Department of Agriculture, Biological Survey, Washington, D. C., you can get a pamphlet, Circular No. 81, “Three Important Wild Duck Foods,” which tells you all about wild rice, wild celery and pondweeds.
