WILD BEES—Are wild bees found in trees in Nova Scotia? If not, where do they live? What is the best bait to use for them and how is it prepared?
Your question surprises me as I was not aware that bees would live as far north as N. S. If there are any there, I am certain they would be found in trees, for they seldom live in the rocks in localities where hollow trees are found. For bait, early in the season use salt moistened with water, to which a few drops of oil of anise has been added. Leave this in an exposed place for some time and bees will work on it steadily. Later on burn honeycomb on hot stones and sprinkle some oil of anise on the stones. Our book, “Bee Hunting,” was written by an expert in this line, and tells all about it. If you are interested in hunting bees, I advise you to read it.
