What length of barrels are standard for 16 and 20 gauge shotguns?
Most of the leading makers of shotguns seem to consider the 26 and 28 inch barrels as standard for the 20 gauge gun and the 28 and 30 inch lengths standard for the 16. It must be remembered that decreasing the length of shotgun barrels cuts down the range and velocity considerably more than shortening the barrels of rifles. For all-round work I believe the greater of the lengths in each case will give satisfaction. Personally I would not care for any gauge longer than 30 inches and none shorter than 26 unless it might be the little 28 gauge which would make a very quick handling weapon in the 24 inch length. Shorter barrels on the smaller gauges cut down their killing range considerably under that of the 12 and one must depend upon their quicker handling qualities to make up for their inferior range. Thus if one flushed a quail at 20 yards the lightness and short length of a 20 bore might possibly enable him to draw down on it before it had gone 10 yards more; while the heavier, more awkward 12 would allow the bird to sail 20 yards before the hunter was ready to fire.
