Wearing out of a Firearm from Erosion
What is meant by saying that rifles wear out by erosion?
When this term is applied to rifles it means a gradual wearing away of the surface of the interior of the barrel in front of and for a few inches ahead of the chamber. This wearing away is caused by "gas cutting" and is generally an inevitable condition with the very high-power weapons whose bullets are made of slightly smaller diameter than the bore of the barrel and fit it loosely. At the moment of explosion portions of the gas formed by the burning powder leak out around and ahead of the more slowly moving bullet and their high temperature and high velocity accomplish the fusing or cutting away of the metal. This "erosion" is one feature to be reckoned with as limiting the life of a high-power rifle barrel, being more serious, in my opinion, than the wear resulting from the friction of the metal cased bullets, although most every one and especially the game hunter, will be able to get the worth of his money out of his gun before this condition seriously affects its accuracy.
All gun and ammunition questions should be directed to Maurice H. Decker, La Porte, Indiana. I am here to serve you, so write me your wants in the line of firearms information.
