A cheap alternative to expensive waterproof matches!
If you have ever priced out waterproof matches you realize that the price you pay for 50 is usually more than you pay for 500 regular matches. By following these two easy ways to waterproof matches you can gaurantee that if you ever need them they will be handy.
Starting with a box of Ohio Blue Tip Strike Anywhere matches, melt some paraffin in a tin can placed in a pot of water on the stove. Dip each match into the paraffin tip first and about half way down the stick. Place on wax paper to cool and store in empty film containers until needed.
Method 2 - Again with Ohio Blue Tip Strike Anywhere Wooden Matches, dip the matches in shellac tip first and half way down the match. Hang upside down using a piece of double stick tape on an old box or by driving them into a piece of Styrofoam suspended off your work area. It is advisable to cover your work area with newspaper to prevent a mess.
I usually keep a set of 30 or so matches in a film canister, heads down, onto which I have glued a small piece of sandpaper to the inside of the cap. If I ever need am emergency fire in a hurry, my matches are ready.
