WATERPROOFING CANVAS—SUGAR OF LEAD—Will you kindly inform me what the effect of each ingredient is on the material when using sugar of lead and alum for waterproofing canvas? Is there anything gained by using more of the ingredients than will be needed for saturating solution and in using the sugar of lead which I understand is a dangerous poison, are there any particular pre cautions necessary?

I have never been able to make a success of this waterproofing process, therefore cannot give much information. Sugar of lead is poisonous and one should use care in applying it.
