VARNISHING STOCK—Can you give me a recipe for varnishing a rifle stock to appear like oiled walnut?

Sandpaper very smooth. Then stain a spirit varnish with aniline walnut dye. Lay this varnish on very carefully. You can get a stain by drying green walnut husks, and then boiling them in lye. Apply this stain hot to the wood, so it will soak in. Then varnish with a hard, dark varnish.
