Turkey hunting is one of the fastest growing hunting pursuits, if you choose to hunt turkey here is a few safety tips to take into the field with you.
Never stalk a turkey – Turkey are very wary birds by nature, they will bust you long before you can get within range, but you put yourself in unnecessary risk while trying.
If you see another hunter approaching your decoys remain absolutely still, do not use your call to signal your presence, nor move. Instead in a loud clear voice identify yourself as another hunter.
Position yourself so that you have something substantial behind you, covering your entire body and head.
Be certain of your target, including what is behind it.
Don’t wear anything red, white or blue, even if it is covered, these are the colors hunters look for to identify a turkey.
Don’t conceal yourself so well that other hunters cannot see you, or so well you cannot clearly see your surroundings.
Keep your safety on until it is time to shoot.
Always keep your gun pointed in a safe direction.
Before getting up to change locations, be sure to check your surroundings to make sure that no other hunters are coming into your spread or responding to your calls.
Set up your decoys in a way that minimizes the risk that another hunter will take a shot at them and hit you as well.
By following these simple turkey hunting safety tips, you can ensure that turkey hunting remains a safe sport for yourself and everyone else in the woods.
