Outfit for Ontario-What kind of an outfit would two trappers need for all-around trapping in Ontario? What rifle would be best?
For the camping outfit, food, clothing, etc., you are referred to Camp and Trail Methods, which will tell you just what is needed. As for trapping outfit, I think that 150 steel traps will be all that two persons can tend well there, but if you could tend more traps, you could use deadfalls to make up the required number. For general trapping, I would select abut eighty No. 1 traps, mostly with stiff springs, if I were allowed a choice, to be used for weasels, mink and marten, but also to catch fishers and lynx when these animals come along; then about forty No. 1 ½ traps of the Victor Brand, for fishers, and general use; about twenty No. 3 Oneida Jump Traps, for lynx and foxes in winter; about six No. 3 Newhouse bear traps. Foxes are difficult to trap there, but there is such a large proportion of silver greys and good cross that persistent work in that line is likely to bring a rich reward. You should also have several pounds of light weight codfish lines for lynx snares and other used; for guns, see answer to above question; plenty of ammunition; six or eight coils of brass snare wire for rabbits; three axes, weight about 2 ¼ pounds each, with good length handles; files and whetstones; two pack saws, two tumplines, two pairs snowshoes for each, two rabbit skin blankets for camping out in cold weather, two heavy woolen blankets and shelter cloth for camping. For other things needed see “Camp and Trail Methods”.
