Training for Coon-I have a very fine, 4 months old pup, ½ blood hound and ½ foxhound. I would like to have the brother hunters tell me how to break a young dog to hunt coon, as I have no dog to train him with.
I claim there are no better nosed dogs, and the word hound tow breeds combined, means trailing. A very simple method with which I trained a coon dog is, when three months old I laid a glove on the fence and he barked good; later I dragged it along the fence and started him to chase on fences. The most important, take your dog out often, stay with him, don’t go to your neighbor’s and play cards and leave the dog go home, that will make him a poor stayer.
Don’t get discouraged if you don’t catch anything the first night, but spare troubles. Take your dog to creeks and fences where you know coons are. A live opossum is a good trainer. Let him run a short distance then follow him and put on a tree. Get your dog, show him the trail; if he will not find the opossum, get him and make him bark, holding the opossum almost in reach of the dog.
