TRAPPING—PRAIRIE DOG—I would appreciate it greatly if you could tell me how to trap prairie dogs. I have a couple of Stop Thief traps but they will not come out of the holes when the trap is there. Is there any successful way to snare them?
The prairie dog is a shrewd little animal and is not easy to trap. I am sure you could not get them in Stop Thief traps, and perhaps not with snares. I think the most successful way to trap them is with small steel traps carefully set and covered in front of the holes. Stake the trap and drive the stake down out of sight. Prairie dogs are easily shot with a .22 caliber rifle, and I have shot quite a number of them. Some of them will get into the holes but you can’t help it sometimes.
