Trout and Pickerel-Can trout and pickerel be caught by the use of flies or artificial baits in the Great Lakes? If so, what kind and what time of year is best? I live on the shore of Lake Huron.
Trout takes flies and artificial baits both – spoons, say. I have heard of pickerel being caught on flies, but it is not a common practice. Spoons and live bait are commonly used. If the spring is the best fishing, but you would get all you wanted in the summer too. They tell me the Coachman, Grizzly King, Yellow Sallie-any of the standard flies serve well for trout. Let them be tied on No. 6 or 10 hooks and have a variety. In reading the Science of Fishing, please observe that in nine-tenths of the statements, whet is said of stream fishing applies equally well to lake fishing; that what is said of carp allies to bullhead and catfish; what is said of anything may be applied to any other thing. I’ve caught trout by bass methods and bass by trout methods.
