TANNING MUSKRAT SKINS—Please tell me the best way to tan muskrat skins.
Equal parts alum and salt; one-tenth part borax; one-tenth tar saltpeter; three quarts sharp vinegar to the pound of alum, and dis. solve; then soak the skin, or skins for, an hour, drain and then soak again. Then wash out the skin in lukewarm water, with one ounce of soda to four gallons. Sponge flesh side with kerosene oil, and hang up to dry. As soon as a dry spot appears, work and pull till dry. Our Tanning Guide is a great help—twenty-five cents. Other processes are given in it.
