TANNING GROUNDHOG SKINS—Please tell me how to tan woodchuck or groundhog skins.
Remove the hair and grain (the thin outside skin) on a smooth beam, using a square edged instrument, and flesh it carefully. Take a bar of ordinary laundry soap and shave it into a pail of hot water, and stir until the soap is dissolved. Put the skin in this and let it remain four days. Then remove it, wring it as dry as possible and hang it in the sun to dry. Pull and stretch it repeatedly while drying so that it will dry soft. If it is perfectly soft when dry, smoke it over a rotten hardwood smudge, but if you cannot make it soft enough, you must put it in the soap solution again, and repeat the succeeding operations.
