SUITABLE FOOTWEAR FOR WISCONSIN—Which would be the most suitable footwear to use on a thirty days’ trip in northern Wisconsin, from October fifteenth to November fifteenth? Would rubber shoes with leather tops be preferable to a pair of good laced boots?
While I don’t know what you mean to do there at that time of year I presume you intend to hunt small game, as the deer season does not open until November eleventh. For that t am sure you cannot get anything better than a pair of light weight laced hunting boots, with eleven inch tops, or near that. For my own use I would prefer the oiled shoe pacs with a double sole, but for one who is not used to wearing soft soled shoes they may cause sore feet; at least it would require a week to get used to them. But they are light and waterproof and I like them better than rubber shoes which are likely to be too warm in October, and are tiresome for walking in brush, as the rubber takes such a grip on everything which it comes in contact with. Knee length laced boots are too warm, but with ten or eleven inch tops you can draw your socks over your trousers and will have strong, comfortable footwear. For deer hunting the rubber shoes may be better.
