STANDARD LOAD—I have a 28 gauge shotgun and I would like to know the right load for it—how many black edge wads and the amount of powder and shot, size of shot, and whether chilled or soft shot, for such game as rabbits and pheasants. What make of powder do you recommend?

You failed to state the make or grade of your gun but I presume it is capable of withstanding any standard load of black or smokeless powder. T he standard powder charge for this gauge is 1 3/4 drams of black, or bulk smokeless powder, such as Du Pont, New Schultz, Deadshot, Blue Ribbbon, Mullerite, etc. or 14 grains weight of dense smokeless such as Ballistite and Infallible, or 10 grain, (weight) of Walsrode. These dense powders should only be loaded in high base shells. Bulk smokeless powder may be loaded in any shells taking smokeless powder primers. The standard wadding is one cardboard wad (greaseproof) over the powder, and two black edge wads seated firmly on top, then the shot, and a thin cardboard over the shot charge, with the shell firmly crimped. Five eighths ounce of shot is the standard charge. Use shot at least one size smaller than you would use in a 12 gauge for the same game, so that there will be enough pellets to give a fairly dense pattern. Chilled shot give the best penetration and are less likely to lead the barrels of a new gun, and I would use them in all sizes smaller than No. 5. You will find that your gun will shoot some sizes better than others. You must buy primers suited to the shells you use.
