Staghounds-Are staghounds used for killing game or just for running it?

Staghounds are only used in this country for hunting wolves, coyotes and bobcats. They run the game down and gill it if there are enough of them used together to do so.

I noticed a query in H-T-T says a Texas subscriber, asking what animals a staghound will trail, and whether a cross of greyhound and staghound would produce good trailers. I have had considerable experience with staghounds, greyhounds and crossed. None of these dogs will trail game-they follow by sight. A few of each breed will trail rabbits and coyotes a little. I have a greyhound that will trail rabbits if she can find where they have been within thirty minutes, and if she is with a pack of trail hounds she will trail on a fresh coyote track along with the others. A neighbor of mine has a staghound that will trail a coyote just as well as any hound, and will bark on a trail, but this dog has been run with trail hounds since a pup, and is the only one I ever saw that would do so.
