The Squirrel that wasn't

My Dad, brother, and I enjoy squirrel hunting. Once we hit the woods, we usually tend to spread out over certain areas. On one such trip, I spotted what I still swear looked like the tail of a squirrel in the fork of a tree. So I raised my shotgun and fired. (I was still relatively new to the hunting scene at that point, I think most of my shot had been blocked by some branches.) After shooting, I was rather perturbed when it appeared that I hadn't hit anything. But what was even more embarrassing is that a bird then flew out from the fork in the tree. To this day, I still swear I saw a squirrel, but I still can't explain the bird.
