Squirrel-To Tan Skins- How do you tan squirrel skins and can you color the fur?
I’ve tanned a good many for gloves and ear flaps. I used equal parts salt, rock salt and alum, say five ounces of each, dissolved in hot water. Cooled and soaked the skins in it a day or two. Then wrung out and twisted and worked till dry and soft. There are a number of secret recipes for dyeing furs. I believe that walnut stain combed into the fur with a fine comb, working it back and forth little by little, will do as well as any.
