SPRUCE GUM—Is it spruce gum that is used on the seams? How can the gum be procured?
Spruce gum is the proper stuff to use for the seams. You can find it on the spruce trees along streams where the spring ice and drift have scarred the trunks or where they were marred by falling trees, etc. Melt the gum in a kettle and strain it through a coarse cloth, such as a piece of gunny sack. It will become black and hard rapidly in cooling.
