Spaying a bitch or castrating a dog, invariably has a detrimental effect on them so far as hunting qualities are concerned. For the first two years it makes practically no difference, but thereafter they become very fat and lazy, ambitionless and as hunters, practically worthless. Of course, it is very disagreeable to have a bitch com in heat when not wanted to breed, but if hunting instinct is to be preserved then some patience should be indulged in by shutting her up during that time-from time she starts “coloring” till she fairly snaps and snarls at male dogs if they come near her, which will be about twenty days.
