SNOWSHOES—SIZE TO WEAR—Can you give me any pointers on snowshoes to use in the mountains, as to size, etc.? Is a 12 x 42 shoe a good size? I have never used snowshoes, but I am tall, six feet two inches in height, and weigh about 155 pounds.
I do not know what kind of shoes are worn most in that part of the country, but I know the size you speak of are too small for you. I am about your own weight and only about two inches less in height, and I would use a snowshoe four feet long and fourteen or fifteen inches wide, until I learned of something more suitable. It should have a heavy, coarse mesh in the center. I have used snowshoes four feet ten inches long and fifteen inches wide in the loose snow of the North. Choose a flat toe shoe for rough country as it is better for climbing. The book Camp and Trail Methods, gives two chapters on snowshoes, and I have no doubt that you could learn a lot from it.
