SNARES—SIZE AND HEIGHT—What size should snares be made for foxes and rabbits, how high should they be set and how many wires should be used?
A fox snare should measure about eight inches in diameter and the bottom of the loop should set about seven inches from the ground or log. Some trappers use only two strands of heavy wire and some use hay wire, single, but I think it best to use about six strands of No. 20 brass wire, twisted lightly. Rabbit snares should be made of two strands of the same kind of wire. The loop should be about four and one-half inches in diameter and the bottom of the snare should be about three and one-half inches high.
