Skunk-Way to Kill-What is the best way to kill a trapped skunk?
Each skunk trapper has his own pet way of killing skunks, but no way that I have ever tried for killing skunks without having them throw their scent, has been entirely successful, and I may say that I have tried most methods that I have heard of. Considering this, if one is trapping skinks extensively, so that he gets these animals in his traps every day, he is sure to be scented more or less all of the time, and as his time is valuable also, what is the use to bother with slow and difficult methods of killing the trapped animals. Most trappers who catch many skunks shoot them or kill them with a club. I prefer the former way, using a .22 caliber rifle or pistol, and I try to shoot squarely down in the center of the back, to break the backbone. If you can do this the skunk will die without throwing his scent, as the breaking of the spinal cord causes complete paralysis of the hind quarters. Bit in the fall skunks are usually very fat, and unless you stand squarely above the skunk and shoot downward, you are likely to miss the backbone. Whenever possible in skunk trapping it is advisable to use traps that kill the catch.
