Skunk-Vs.-Pole Cat-I was raised in the East and only came West about a year ago. My husband being a trapper, I asked him if he ever caught a polecat. He laughed at me and said there was no such animal. I always thought a polecat and skunk were the same. Would like to hear what some of the old time trappers have to say.
The polecat is the skunk-here in America. Of course, the original polecat is a European weasel, whose odor was enough to make the pioneers call the skunk “polecat.” The polecat is called the skunk, the same as the violin is called a fiddle.
