SKINNING TAILS WITH A SPLIT STICK—Will you please tell me how a split stick is used in skinning the tail of a mink?
The “split stick” mentioned for this use is simply a 10 or 12 inch stick about as thick as your finger split half its length. The skin is started on the tail with the fingers, then the split is spread open and slipped over the tail bone, and the stick grasped with the right hand, with the tail between the second and third fingers. A steady pull will now strip the skin cleanly from the tail.
