Skunk-Splitting the Tail-I want some information on skinning skunks. Must the tail be split open; if not how do you get the bone out? Must I hang animals up to skin it or can I skin it on the ground? What is the best way to flesh the skin?
The tail of the skunk may be split a few inches on the under side and skinned with a knife as far as it is split, and the remaining part may be stripped off with a split stick. It is not necessary to split the tail at all if you do not wish to. The tail of any small animal my be skinned easily by means of a split stick. It is not necessary to hang the animal up to skin it, in fact, I never hang up such animals. I skin them by holding them on my knees. The best thing I know of for fleshing is a lath or shingling hatchet. The skin should be placed on the smooth board shaped something like a stretching board, but narrower and not beveled, and the fat and flesh is easily shoved off with the hatchet.
