Skunk-Description of-Are skunk and polecat the same animal?
Now, if you mean the animal that is some times called “polecat” in America, especially in the South, will say that it is the skunk. There are only two special of skunk, namely, the ordinary striped skunk and the little spotted skunk of the southern and central states, commonly known by the name of “civet cat,” which is as much of a misnomer as the name “polecat” when applies to the striped skunk. The real polecat is found in Europe. It is more like a mink than a skunk, but it also has a powerful scent. There is really a member of the polecat family found in this country, but here we never know it by that name; we call it the black footed ferret or wild ferret. It is found on the western plains. But as a direct and simple answer to your question, the polecat and the skunk, in America, are one and the same.
