Skunks-To Kill and Skin-What is the best method of killing and skinning skunks so that one will not get scented to any great extent?
There is no sure way to kill skunks without scent. One of the best ways as well as the quickest, is to shoot them in the center of the back with a .22 caliber rifle or pistol, and if the bullet hits the backbone, breaking it, the animal cannot scent. Don’t shoot them in the head. Skunks are usually fat in fall and early winter and there is plenty of chance to miss breaking the back. In such cases they are almost sure to discharge their scent. Have a rubber cloth knapsack to carry the skins in; skin them on the spot, if possible, and rub hands well with some kind of grease before you handle the skunks. After you get home wash your hands well with hot water and soap and scarcely any odor will remain.
