Skunks, Diseased, Cure-Can you tell me what it eh matter with my skunks? Ten of them died last month. When they start getting sick, they come out of the dens and run a few feet, then lay on their belly with hind legs stretched back and standing on front legs. They lay that way for a little while, then go farther and do the same thing over and keep it up from 4 to 10 hours, then they are so weak that the hind legs drag. They drag themselves in the den and then die. My pen is 100 feet long and 50 feet wide with 24 dens in it. I had 7 old and 44 young ones before they died. I feed them bread and milk, meat, corn and peas and fresh water at all times. I would like very much if you could tell me the cause of this, also a cure.
One cause of the disease is probably due to lack of space. You have too many skunks in your enclosure. Too much raw meat will cause disease. Would advise you to separate diseased animals from others, penning same to themselves, also clean out all dens. The dens must be free from dampness, if this is impossible, make new ones. Feed diseased skunks grapes, green corn, eggs and fresh meat twice a week. And do not give them any milk. Do not feed skunks all they can eat. It is not advisable to keep skunks fat in hot weather.
