—What kind of traps ire best for foxes and skunks?

There are many traps that are suitable for fox trapping and each trapper has his favorite kind, so if I say that any one kind is best, that must be regarded as merely my own preference. There is no doubt that the Newhouse traps are the best traps made, but for foxes, I prefer the Oneida Jump traps, because they set fiat and are more easily concealed than traps having V springs; because they are lighter and because the larger sizes required for water sets are not too strong, as is the case when large Newhouse traps are used. A No. 1 Oneida Jump trap is a dandy for a water set, for it has the proper spread of jaws, and the No. 2 is fine for dry seta, but the No. 2 and No. 1 Newhouse traps are too strong for foxes, especially the No. 1. I have frequently used a No. 4 Oneida Jump trap for a water set and it answers admirably. I used the double spring style, but I believe the new single spring traps of this make are better than the double spring kind.

For water sets and trail sets the traps should be fitted with the Newhouse two-prong drags. For skunks I think that the double jaw and webbed aw styles are best, because the catch cannot escape by gnawing the foot off. Here again, I think the Oneida Jump is beat, the No. 91, with double jaws. But there are other good skunk traps, such as the No. 97 and No. 91 1/2 Newhouse, with double jaws and the Nos., 81 and 81 1/2 Newhouse, which have a web beneath the jaws.

The latter style especially is good, and is now made with a skeleton web which makes the jaws lighter and less likely to be held by the covering; also less likely to choke up when covered heavily. All of the No. 1 size traps, and all of the No. 1 1/2 except the Newhouse, are good skunk traps. The No. 1 1/2 Newhouse is too strong, as I see it. The new Killum traps should be very good for skunks, also, as there would be less danger of getting scented.
