For the .38 Smith and Wesson cartridge, I can only give you the figures found in the Smith and Wesson catalogue. The cartridge is loaded with 15 grains of black powder and a 146 grain bullet. Fired from a 4 inch barrel the penetration is 4 ˝ 7/8 inch boards. The .38 Smith and Wesson Special, used in the Military Models, is loaded with 21 ˝ grains of black powder and a 158 grain bullet. The penetration is 8 ˝ pine boards-length of barrel is not stated. Rimfire cartridges cannot be used in any center fire revolver.
