SHOT IN .38-55 RIFLE—Could I shoot chilled shot in a .38-55 Marlin rifle? Would it be all right to remove the bullets and a part of the powder, and load the shells with wads and shot? Will these shells work through the magazine?
No, do not attempt to use shot in this way in any rifle. If you want to use shot, which should be used but little in a rifle, put the cartridges, in which the shot are enclosed in a bullet-shaped wood case, as in that way the shot do not touch the barrel and thus injure the rifling. Shot loaded as you describe would scatter awfully, as the twist of the grooves would throw them outward from the center, in every direction, and they would fill the grooves with lead and damage the lands (upstanding portions between the grooves). I do not believe that they would work through the action, as the mouth of the shell would catch on the barrel.
