Sheep and Cattle Ranch – Can you tell me in what state or place a young man of eighteen could get a job on a sheep or cattle ranch. Are there plenty of men looking for this kind of work? About what wages is paid, and at what time of year does the work last, or is it kept up all year? I would like to get acquainted with the west, then I would go to trapping.
I really do not know much about this, but I think that Montana, Wyoming and Oregon are the greatest sheep states. I think you would have little trouble getting a position as sheep herder and I believe the pay is about forty to fifty dollars a month. Sheep herders are kept busy winter and summer, and I think it would be the same on a cattle ranch. I believe Wyoming and Texas are the best cattle states, but I am not sure. To get work on a cattle ranch you must be a reasonably good rider and must learn to do many things that are not done in the East. Perhaps some of our western readers can give a more satisfactory answer to this question. We will publish an article on sheep herding soon.
