SEED—GOLDEN SEAL—PLANTING—When la the best time to plant golden seal seeds in fall or spring, and do they need to be shaded before they are up?
Golden seal seed may be sown in the fall, or the seeds may be stratified and planted in seed beds in early spring. Fall sowing of seed is probably most satisfactory. The seed bed may be made in the woods. Of course the young plants will have to be transplanted. It takes a long time to raise a crop of marketable roots from seed, and it is not at all satisfactory. It is better to set out divided roots. The roots are cut into pieces and stratified the same as seed, and are planted after they have budded. Shade should be placed before the plants are set out.
