SCENTLESS SKUNK TRAPS—Can you tell me whether Sure Death traps will catch skunks without the animals scenting? If not, can you tell me of some trap that will?
I have never used the Sure Death trap, but I believe that it may be depended on to catch and kill skunks without danger of them scenting; in fact, I think that any trap that catches the skunk by the peck will prevent them from scenting. The only trap of this kind that I have ever used is the Stop Thief, and I hardly gave this a fair trial, as all that I can remember of catching in them was two skunks and one opossum. One skunk was caught by the neck, was dead, and no scent whatever; the other was caught across the hind quarters and was also dead, but the lever had struck the scent gland and there was a little odor. This was caused by having the trap set to spring too hard, or by not having the trigger bent sufficiently, and was not caused by a fault of the trap. I think the new Killum trap, made by the Oneida Community, is better than either, as the trigger arrangement allows the trap to be set over a den and will catch the animal no matter whether he is entering the den or leaving it. The Sure Death Is strictly a bait trap, and will catch from one side only.
