Scents Glands, Muskrat-I would like to know where the scent glands of the muskrat are found. Should they be dried before making perfume? What is the proper liquid to mix with it?
The scent glands of the muskrat are found well back on the belly just under the skin. They are largest in the male animal and are thick, veiny, cream colored sacks about the size of the tip of a manís finger. In the spring they contain some 6 or 8 drops of scent each. By perfume I presume you mean scent, to be used in trapping. It is not necessary to dry them and they may be split open and put in a small quantity of alcohol. The alcohol will soon evaporate after the scent is placed on the setting.
