Half-cock safeties are safeties on which the firearm has a position in which it locks found between the firing position and the fully cocked position. Once the safety is on half cock, the only way to disengage it is to pull the hammer fully back to the cocked position. Half-cock safeties are found on many of the older lever actions, such as the Winchester model 94. If the safety is worn and the hammer is struck abruptly the safety can fail the firearm will discharge.
