I am a reader of the "Fur News" and certainly think it is a fine magazine. There is nothing I like better than to trap, therefore I enjoy reading about adventures of my brother trappers. I have been reading the "Gun Rack." I have used many different kinds of guns and I will say my favorite is the .22 high-power Remington for hunting big game. For hunting grouse and small game I use a 12-gauge double-barrel shotgun.
I will tell of the first time I ever shot a- big gun other than a .22 rifle. I was about nine years old. I was working in the corn field on a very hot day. I Began to get thirsty, so decided to go to the house and get some water. I had to go through some timber. On my way through the timber I scared up a bunch of grouse. I immediately became excited and struck out on a run for home. I grabbed the shotgun and started on a run back to where I saw them alight. I found two sitting in a tree and raised the gun to fire when a horrible thought struck me. I stopped and braced the gun against a tree, took aim and then shut my eyes and fired, expecting to pick myself up from the ground. But not so; the tree had received the shock, not me. I heard something flutter and opening my eyes I saw a fine big grouse lying on the ground. I eagerly seized it and proudly carried it home. It aroused my trapping blood and it hasn't settled down yet.
