Sabot is used to describe a bullet that is housed inside a plastic or similar case, the case protects the bullet as it travels down the bore and engages the rifling to help spin the bullet, once free of the barrel, the sabot drops free.

Sabots are used to help shoot undersized bullets in larger caliber firearms, such as a 22 caliber bullet in a 30/06 or a 44 caliber pistol bullet in a 50 caliber muzzle loader.
