Sable-What is the fur known as sable and what animal furnishes it? The furriers here seem to sell more of it than of any other, but I cannot find the sable listed on the raw fur price lists.

The true sable is a Russian or Siberian animal of the marten family and the fur is very valuable. Marten are sometimes sold as sable and I believe that the pale marten are dyed to imitate this fur. Cheaper furs are also made to imitate sable. I believe that the opossum and even the muskrat are dyed to represent sable and are sold as such. The fur manufacturers sell many kinds of fur that are unknown to trappers, being cheap furs which are dyed and given a fancy name such as “Isabella Fox”, “Electric Seal”, “Brook Mink”, etc.
