RUST ON OUTSIDE—Will some person please tell me how to remove rust from the outside of gun barrels?

I am of the opinion that you cannot remove the rust without destroying the finish to a more or less extent. Apply kerosene, keeping it moist with the oil for an hour or more; then rub with powdered pumice stone. This will remove it if it is not rusted very badly, but will also remove some of the color.
