RUST ON STEEL TRAPS

RUST ON STEEL TRAPSóDoes kerosene do any harm to the springs of steel traps when it is used to remove rust?

Kerosene will not harm the trap but its use is not recommended, for it leaves an odor on the trap that will frighten wary game. I knew of a Canadian Indian trapper, an expert in trapping otters, who bought an outfit of second-hand traps from a white trapper, and before buying them he inquired whether they had ever been oiled with kerosene, saying that if they had he did not want them, as they would not be good for otter trapping. You can remove the heavy rust, if they are badly rusted, by means of coarse sandpaper, and then boil them in a solution of maple, oak or walnut bark.
