Rio Grande River – Could a person go in a canoe from El Paso, Texas, down the Rio Grande River to its mouth?
Some years ago I was in El Paso, Texas, whither I had gone with some idea of making the river’s mouth. I found that I was not the only one with such ideas for a party of two were then preparing to do the same thing. I resolved to await the outcome of their adventure. The party had to start at some point below the city, as there is seldom sufficient water to float a canoe at El Paso. The trop proved to be very hard. The men could not camp on shore nights on account of the innumerable insect and reptile pests. The stream proved very difficult in many places; so shallow and rock strewn that the men had to wade to direct or lift the boat. In one such effort one of the party had his leg broken, thereby leaving to his mate the desperate task of completing the journey without aid. The venture proved rich in trophies, fur-bearing animals being very numerous, especially coyote, lobo, wolf, bobcat, mountain lion, etc.
