RINGTAILED CAT — DESCRIPTION OF—I would like to know what this animal is: It was captured on the plains in Texas. It had a head much like that of a coon, but the nose long and turned up a little; tail about eighteen inches long and tapered to the root; feet somewhat like those of an opossum; eyes round and brown; fur brown; dark rings on the tail. It had a squeaky bark.
From your description I think the animal must have been a ringtail cat or cacomixle, but I was not aware that these animals were found out on the plains.
