Rimmed cases have a rim that protrudes out past the head of the case and is of a larger diameter than the case body. The rim allows the case to be removed after firing and on some cartridges also serves to control headspace. Shotgun ammunition and the 30/30 Winchester are both examples of rimmed cartridges.
